CDC Receives $4,000.00 Grant from McManus Shepard Fund

The Guernsey County CDC has recently been awarded a $5,000.00 grant from The Columbus Foundation and the John and Edna McManus Shepard fund to support the purchase and installation of interpretative signage along the The Great Guernsey Trail. This grant combined with a generous $4,000.00 donation for the same project means the CDC will have $9,000.00 to put towards the design and purchase of educational signs for our beautiful trail. These signs will touch on a variety of subjects such as wetlands, wildlife, stream ecosystems and more. Interpretive signs play an important role in educating and engaging visitors while enhancing experiences for all users of the trail.

Great Guernsey Trail Extension and Turner Avenue Streetscape/Trailhead

On May 9, 2024 Governor Mike Dewine, through the Appalachian Community Grant Program, announced that The Guernsey County Community Development Corp.’s application to extend The Great Guernsey Trail to downtown Cambridge has been funded for $4.5 million. The funding also includes money to create parking and a trailhead at the Turner Ave. lot owned by the City of Cambridge. The extension will add 3 miles to our current 7 miles for a total round trip of 20 miles and take the trail from the Corduroy Rd. Trailhead, to downtown Cambridge via Ohio Avenue and Byesville Rd. 

This is a HUGE win for the CDC, the City and all of Guernsey County. But it couldn’t have been done without the help of the Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) and its executive director, William Arnett, OMEGA, funding from the State of Ohio, and the support of local leaders.

3rd Annual Firecracker Race a Huge Success

WOW! That is all we can say. We had 262 people register for our 3rd Annual Firecracker 10k & 5k race and over 250 checked-in and completed the race/walk. We received numerous compliments on how well managed our races are and we take great pride in that. Special thank you to our timing services Muskingum Multisports, Bistor Boys DJ Service for the music and PA system and Heather Sevigny Photography for our photos. The proceeds from this race will help to maintain and repair the Great Guernsey Trail. 
 
Thank you all for making this event a great one and see you at the next race, our 12ks of Christmas Race on December 14th!

2024 Countywide Litter & Tire Cleanup

The CDC will once again be holding a litter & tire cleanup. The date and times for the cleanup are September 20, 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. and September 21, from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. Due to limitation of funding the scale will be smaller than in years past. There will be a total of 4 locations, they are as follows;
 
1- CDC Maintenance Building, 2000 North Ave. Cambridge.
2. Pleasant City: Village property behind Mel’s Drive-In
3. Wheeling Township: 74321 Eighth St. Rd. Kimbolton
4. Millwood Township: 106 Washington St. Salesville, Ohio.
 
There will be a limit of ONE (1) load per person/household (names and addresses will be taken at each location).
 
Tires are $2.00 per non-commercial and $3.00 for commercial. We are not taking building materials, brush, appliances with freon, paint, chemicals or hazardous materials.
 
This is open to all Guernsey County residents. You must travel to the location closest to you.
 
This event was made possible thanks to a grant from the Ohio EPA and matching funds from the CDC. Special thank you to the elected officials of Wheeling Township, Millwood Township and Pleasant City for staffing the collection sites.

Mobility Ramps

The Guernsey County CDC partnered with Mobility Manager for Muskingum and Guernsey Counties to install ramps for individuals with mobility devices. This program led to the installation of 7 ramps at a combined cost of $10,000, with $8,000 coming from the Mobility Manager and $2,000.00 coming from the CDC. Not only did the CDC donate $2,000.00, but our crews installed every single ramp. This is an example of what happens when people, organizations and community leaders work together to better the lives of our area residents.

Guernsey County Receives $325K INSPIRE Grant from the ARC

The Guernsey County Community Development Corporation (GCCDC) has been awarded a $325,645.00 grant by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to provide paid work experience and training in Guernsey County. The award is part of a recently announced $12 million package through ARC’s INSPIRE Initiative, which addresses the region’s substance use disorder crisis with investments that strengthen services in the recovery ecosystem and help facilitate workforce entry and re-entry.

“I commend The Guernsey County Community Development Corporation for their work supporting the recovery ecosystem in Appalachian Ohio, they are integral to bringing our INSPIRE projects to life,” said ARC Federal Co-Chair Gayle Manchin. “The Guernsey County Community Development Corporation is a great asset in our efforts to address the region’s substance use disorder crisis, and I look forward to seeing how they will help build a strong recovery ecosystem and a stronger workforce for the opportunities of tomorrow.”

Guernsey County CDC Executive Director Ron Gombeda said, “Words cannot begin to express how grateful I am for the ARC believing in our project and what are trying to do to improve the lives of those going through substance use disorder. This funding will provide paid work experience for those who are on the path to recovery, with the goal being full time permanent employment with a local business. I want to personally thank the ARC for its work in addressing this crisis within the Appalachia region by making this funding available.

Since INSPIRE was established in April 2021, ARC has invested $28.1 million in 83 projects across 289 Appalachian counties. The $12 million package for fiscal year 2022 is projected to improve nearly 450 businesses and prepare nearly 3,000 students and workers for new opportunities in the workforce.

ARC is expecting to issue a request for proposals for the next round of INSPIRE grant opportunities in early 2023. Additional information and resources are available at:
