Guernsey County Community Development Corporation Announces Successful Grant Award in Partnership with Jackson Township

Cambridge, Ohio March 9, 2017 – The Guernsey County Community Development Corporation (CDC) recently partnered with Jackson Township to complete a USDA Community Facilities Grant, which the township received and will use to purchase a new dump truck.
The USDA program is a combination of grants and loans and is designed to help rural municipalities purchase equipment and improve facilities. Jackson Township will receive a combination of $50,000 in grant money and $77,000 in low interest loan money, the total amount represents the cost of the new equipment. This partnership is part of the CDC’s Township & Municipalities Outreach and Support Program, which is designed to offer a variety of assistance to local governments and includes grant writing and management assistance. The success of this grant application was made possible by the support of Jackson Township Trustees, Dave Gombeda, Bussy Clewell and Rusty Winland and Fiscal Officer Donna King-Hurd in coordination with CDC Executive Director Ron Gombeda and Finance Manager Jeanette Hannon.

The Guernsey County Community Development Corporation is looking for a full time seasoned professional to fill the role of Sales and Marketing Specialist. The Sales and Marketing Specialist will be responsible for executing marketing strategies, assisting with campaign development, analyzing the effectiveness of the various campaigns and developing lead donor programs.

  • An Associates or Bachelors Degree in Marketing, Advertising or related discipline, is preferred but not required
  • Two + years of sales and marketing experience, including social media, outside sales experience preferred but not required
  • Strong understanding of computer, Microsoft and publishing programs
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of local area (Guernsey, Noble and Belmont Counties)
  • Ability to analyze data to determine campaign efficiency
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills are required
  • Create and execute lead donor and sponsor programs
  • Proficiency with WordPress and/or other website development tools
  • Experience working in the nonprofit industry is a plus

We offer excellent work/life balance and 4 weeks paid vacation/time off.

Typical work day is 8 am to 4:30 p.m. M-F but flexible scheduling is possible. Some weekends are required (typically 2 to 3 weekends a year).

Jeanette Hannon is the CDC’s New Office Manager

Jeanette Hannon has recently transitioned into the role of CDC office manager from her position on the Board of Directors as well as Branch Manager for Woodforest Bank. In her new position she is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the financial accounts and the stability of the organization. Jeanette has 18 years of banking and financial background. Her experience includes profit and losses, operational management, cost reduction strategies, payroll, book keeping and customer service. Jeanette is a proud mother of three girls. Paige, her eldest is a Licensed Practical Nurse. Madyson, her middle is a Commercial Arts student and Brionna, her youngest is very active in sports, such as volleyball, basketball and softball. Jeanette enjoys spending time with her family, volunteering in the community and reading in her down time.

We are lucky to have Jeanette as part of our team. Please take a moment to stop in our office an welcome her to the world of non-profit community engagement!

Litter Will Know Our Wrath….

We recently teamed up with the Department of Jobs and Family Services to promote a cleaner Guernsey County through the use of litter cleanup crews. These crews will be under the direct management of a CDC supervisor and the crews will be sent out into the county to cleanup targeted roadsides, illegal dumpsites, parks and walking trails.

The workers will be staffed by community service workers and each one will be provided with protective clothing, disposal bags and direct support from the CDC in terms of equipment, transportation and leadership. This program is a result of our organizations commitment to combat the litter issue that is plaguing our county.

In 2014 and 2015, the CDC secured funding through the Ohio EPA to conduct a countywide cleanup. Our efforts resulted in the removal of 22,792 illegally dumped tires, 192 tons of illegally dumped material and we collected 4,229 bags of litter. This new program is a continuation of our dedication of keeping Guernsey County beautiful. This is what we are working towards every day.

Directors Report May 2016

Greetings folks, I hope all is well in your world? Things here at the CDC have been progressing at a quickening pace. First and foremost, we are finally moved into our new office, 905 Wheeling Ave Cambridge. We are very excited to be a part of the downtown community and looking forward to participating in a variety of events scheduled for this summer.

In other news our crews have been very busy completing a variety of projects. Below is a short list of just some of the projects we have completed:

I. Township and Small Village Assistance:

We donated

– 50 stop signs

– 15 “Men Working Signs”

– 12 “High Water Signs”

– Donated 3 culverts

– We are mowing Fairview Cemetery

– Working with Quaker City to complete a NatureWorks Grant

– Removed a log jam in Valley Township, near Pleasant City

– Tore down two abandoned houses and reclaimed the land

– Flood control by removing beaver dam’s along the Great Guernsey Trail

II. Litter Control

Cleaned up two illegal dumpsites

Collected 1,000+ illegally dumped tires

III. Grants

Obtained a grant to build an archery range on CDC property near the state hospital, total: $16,669

Obtained a grant to build a build sanctuary along the great Guernsey Trail, total: $2,294

IV. Nonprofit Support

Donated $1,000 to various nonprofits

Donated use of our bounce houses to local schools and nonprofits

We send employees to help with Faith United Methodist and the Mid-Ohio Foodbank’s free produce market

This is conjunction with our continued operation of our Disabled Military Veterans Transportation Program which continues to transport a number of veterans to doctor appointments.

I hope everyone had a fantastic Easter? After a three day weekend, the staff at the CDC is hard at work on a variety of projects. First up is our Township Outreach Program which was created to align the needs of local townships with the support services offered by the CDC. One of the ways we do this is by providing free stop signs to the townships. In the state of Ohio all stop signs are required to meet new state standards that increase reflection and visibility. The problem with the mandate is that most townships cannot afford to replace every single stop sign within their jurisdiction.

To help meet this need the CDC has worked out an agreement with a sign manufacturer to receive a discount on bulk sign purchases, which we were able to accomplish thanks to our nonprofit status. As a result we have provided the townships with the following:

– 104 Stop signs and 179 signposts.

– 20 “High Water” signs

– 45 Blank signs for street names

– 12 “Men Working” signs

– 30 Reflectors for stop sign posts

– 25 Blank yellow marker signs

We also provided the townships with 8 36 in, 20ft long culverts and 10 12 in, 20ft long culverts.

This was done at absolutely NO cost to the townships!

All of these signs were provided to the townships and was made possible through the continued support of our financial benefactors, small monetary donations and the revenue from our Outdoor Eco Expo and Sportsman’s Bash. Remember, when you donate to the CDC or support the Eco Expo, all proceeds stay RIGHT HERE in Guernsey County and go towards making our county a better place to live and work.

In other news we received the final agreement for the archery range that we will be building on CDC property located near the state hospital grounds. This state of the art complex will consist of the latest targets, elevated platforms that simulate firing from a tree stand and an Atlas Archery Trap Machine that will allow individuals to shot at aerial targets. This range will be completed by fall (weather permitting) and be open to the public shortly thereafter. Please keep checking FB for updates.

Lastly, the CDC made its last pledged donation to the Village of Pleasant City for the construction of a much needed salt bin. The $5,000 donation will help to pay for material and concrete. This project was spearheaded by former Pleasant City Mayor and current CDC Board Member Mike Stranathan and current Pleasant City Council Member Tammy Gress-Wills. Once the salt bin is completed, it will provide ample storage space for the village’s salt and ashes, which will decrease the amount lost to rain, thereby saving money for the residents of the villages.

Greetings from the offices of the CDC! We are busy pushing forward with several projects this year and working on ways to improve both our services and our community. First up for the year is the Great Guernsey Trail Winter Banquet which will be held on March 5th at the Cambridge Eagles, with doors opening at 5:30. Tickets are $25.00 and available by calling the CDC office at 740.439.0020 or by calling Sharon Carpenter, 740.260.0558. Ticket includes dinner and entry into various door prizes. A Chinese auction will also be held. All proceeds from the banquet will go towards the maintenance and improvement of the Great Guernsey Trail.

Our next big event will be our second annual Outdoor Eco Expo and Sportsman’s Bash on June 25th from 11 am to 9 pm. This year’s event will be held at Spring Valley Campground where camping will be available on a first come first serve basis. The celebrity guest for this year’s expo is Cody Lundin, former co-host of the hit reality TV show Dual Survivor. Cody will be on hand for autographs, pictures and a Q&A session. There will also be hundreds of prizes, guns, trips, hunts, vacations and a TINY HOUSE to win as well as vendors, seminars and demonstrations. On July 16th we will be holding our 4th annual Guernsey County Fish Camp at Jackson Park in Byesville from 10 am to noon. This camp is FREE and open to children ages 4 to 15. Participants will learn about fish species, fish habitat, knot tying and proper casting and baiting techniques. All children will receive a free fishing pole, tackle and bait and will be able to fish for free from noon to 3. Free hot dogs, chips and refreshments will be provided. Registration is required (see form below). Completed forms can be emailed back to rgombeda@guernseycountycdc.com or mailed to 2090 North Ave Cambridge, Ohio 43725 attention FISH CAMP.
