Updates to The Great Guernsey Trail and Coal Ridge Park and Trails

Throughout the past few months our work crews have attempted to keep pace with necessary updates and repairs to The Great Guernsey Trail, our dog park and Coal Ridge Park and Trails. All along the trail you will notice that the old wooden message boards have been replaced with new sturdier display boards that are weather and graffiti resistant. At our dog park (located at the Corduroy Rd trail head), we installed some tires, a ramp and a fire hydrant for our four legged furry friends. There is still some more work to be done at the dog park, but we need the ground to dry up. Lastly we are finishing the second and last walking bridge that will connect the Great Guernsey Trail with Coal Ridge. All of these projects have been paid for by grants and private donations, without that monetary support, we couldn’t do what we do. As the year progresses we have a LOT more updates on the project books for our trail, including the resurfacing of the first mile of our trail, so keep an eye on the The Guernsey County Community Development’s Facebook page for updates.

Skate Park

On May 5th we reached an agreement to complete concrete work for our skate park. This process has been many years in the making, going back to 2015, and has involved numerous people and various avenues of funding. Now, thanks to private donations, we have surpassed the dollar amount necessary to pour the concrete and provide a wonderful skate park for people to enjoy. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the history of our project, let me provide you with a little background. Back in 2015 the City of Cambridge donated to the CDC the skate ramps and equipment that had at one time sat on the old tennis court at the city park. Since that time the equipment has sat, unused, in our field next to the Great Guernsey Trail’s parking area on Corduroy Rd. But now, thanks to the dedication of our staff, the generosity of our donors and the support of the public, this equipment will once again be used by people who enjoy skating. Needless to say, I am so very excited for this project to come to fruition. This is just another example of how far the CDC has come and how much we truly care about our county, our neighbors and the future. Remember, when we work together, we can achieve anything.

Long Overdue Update

Greetings Folks, WOW! We had one busy November and December is shaping up to be just as busy. First and foremost, thanks to a $40,000.00 donation from Utica Resources LLC we bought a new hybrid van for our military veterans transportation program and quite frankly, it’s amazing. This is going to save the CDC a FORTUNE on fuel. Speedy Print is designing a fantastic looking warp for the van and once I give it final approval we will post a picture. Our projects are piling up, but we are starting to make some headway. Our employees, Dick Dailey, Paul Dickson and Melissa West completed the install of the Quaker City play pod and swing set. This project was made possible thanks to an ODNR NatureWorks grant written by the CDC on behalf of Quaker City and the use of our in-kind labor. There was an illegal dumpsite in the parking lot of the former Kmart building. People were dumping unwanted items in front of the Special Olympics donations bins, and the amount of material was quite large. We partnered with Jackson Township and the City of Cambridge to dispose of the items and we paid for the disposal fees. This year’s winner of the Willard Tipple Memorial Award is Mick Balogh. Mick is a longtime supporter of the CDC and has made multiple donation so the CDC over the years. This includes donations of money, bicycles, and more. In addition he buys tickets to the Sportsman’s Bash and is a very vocal supporter of our organization and what we are trying to accomplish. 12k’s of Christmas Run For Veterans

We had a first 12k’s of Christmas Race for Veterans. The proceeds from the race will go towards funding our veterans transportation service, which provides free transportation for veterans to and  from a variety of appointments. On hand for the race were 71 runners and walkers, which is a great turnout for a first time run on a cold December morning. The race was held in conjunction with a toy drive for Guernsey County Secret Santa. Individuals donated 6 bicycles, dozens of toys and a few board games. Overall we are extremely pleased with our results and our race, which we couldn’t do without the help of our sponsors, Muskingum Valley Health Services, Buckey Disposal, Classic Solutions, Mancan and the Byesville VFW Post. Thank you everyone that came out and supported our race. We can’t wait for next years event!

Skatepark Capital Campaign

The CDC is launching its latest capital campaign to help improve the lives of local residents. The goal of this campaign is to raise $20,000 to build a new skatepark at Baker Family Park, located on Corduroy Rd near the trail head of the Great Guernsey Trail.

The Project consists of creating a paved pad for skaters to utilize and to place on top of the pad, the skate equipment that was recently donated by the City of Cambridge, to the CDC. The area will be roughly equivalent to the size of a tennis court and be open and free to the public.

So far we have raised $4,000.00 from the proceeds of our Sportsman’s Bash and Expo, but we need an additional $16,000.00. We will be applying for a $5,000.00 grant from Rotary Club of Cambridge (fingers crossed) and seeking out corporate and individual donations.

We know that asking people to donate to a cause is hard, because let’s face it, everyone is on a fixed income, but even a donation of $25.00 will go a long way to helping create one more attraction for our local children and young adults to use. I know a lot of you are always saying, “There is a not a lot of things for people to do here….” well, now is your chance to help make a difference.

2017 Countywide Litter Clean-up & Tire Amnesty Program

On April 28th we received word that our grant application for the CDC’s countywide litter cleanup and tire amnesty program was awarded funding of $38,000 by the Ohio EPA. We will be holding the countywide litter cleanup on September 22nd & 23rd and it will involve nearly all townships and municipalities in Guernsey, with drop off points located in 10 different areas around the county. Roadside cleanup and the cleanup of illegal dumpsites will be completed by the CDC and volunteers, additionally Individuals will be able to drop off tires. This will be the third year that we have managed this program and in 2014 & 2015 we collected over 190 tons of illegally dumped material, 4,229 bags of litter, 22,792 tires and volunteers put in 1,625 hours. Needless to say we are looking forward to another successful cleanup.

Guernsey County Community Development Corporation Announces Successful Grant Award in Partnership with Jackson Township

Cambridge, Ohio March 9, 2017 – The Guernsey County Community Development Corporation (CDC) recently partnered with Jackson Township to complete a USDA Community Facilities Grant, which the township received and will use to purchase a new dump truck.
The USDA program is a combination of grants and loans and is designed to help rural municipalities purchase equipment and improve facilities. Jackson Township will receive a combination of $50,000 in grant money and $77,000 in low interest loan money, the total amount represents the cost of the new equipment. This partnership is part of the CDC’s Township & Municipalities Outreach and Support Program, which is designed to offer a variety of assistance to local governments and includes grant writing and management assistance. The success of this grant application was made possible by the support of Jackson Township Trustees, Dave Gombeda, Bussy Clewell and Rusty Winland and Fiscal Officer Donna King-Hurd in coordination with CDC Executive Director Ron Gombeda and Finance Manager Jeanette Hannon.

Jeanette Hannon is the CDC’s New Office Manager

Jeanette Hannon has recently transitioned into the role of CDC office manager from her position on the Board of Directors as well as Branch Manager for Woodforest Bank. In her new position she is responsible for maintaining and overseeing the financial accounts and the stability of the organization. Jeanette has 18 years of banking and financial background. Her experience includes profit and losses, operational management, cost reduction strategies, payroll, book keeping and customer service. Jeanette is a proud mother of three girls. Paige, her eldest is a Licensed Practical Nurse. Madyson, her middle is a Commercial Arts student and Brionna, her youngest is very active in sports, such as volleyball, basketball and softball. Jeanette enjoys spending time with her family, volunteering in the community and reading in her down time.
