Litter Will Know Our Wrath….

We recently teamed up with the Department of Jobs and Family Services to promote a cleaner Guernsey County through the use of litter cleanup crews. These crews will be under the direct management of a CDC supervisor and the crews will be sent out into the county to cleanup targeted roadsides, illegal dumpsites, parks and walking trails.

The workers will be staffed by community service workers and each one will be provided with protective clothing, disposal bags and direct support from the CDC in terms of equipment, transportation and leadership. This program is a result of our organizations commitment to combat the litter issue that is plaguing our county.

In 2014 and 2015, the CDC secured funding through the Ohio EPA to conduct a countywide cleanup. Our efforts resulted in the removal of 22,792 illegally dumped tires, 192 tons of illegally dumped material and we collected 4,229 bags of litter. This new program is a continuation of our dedication of keeping Guernsey County beautiful. This is what we are working towards every day.

If you haven’t already done so, please checkout our webpage, www.guersneycountycdc.com. There you can view our past projects, our current goals and make a donation to support our commitment to our community’s quality of life.

Thanks,

Ron G.

Directors Report

I hope everyone had a fantastic Easter? After a three day weekend, the staff at the CDC is hard at work on a variety of projects. First up is our Township Outreach Program which was created to align the needs of local townships with the support services offered by the CDC. One of the ways we do this is by providing free stop signs to the townships. In the state of Ohio all stop signs are required to meet new state standards that increase reflection and visibility. The problem with the mandate is that most townships cannot afford to replace every single stop sign within their jurisdiction.

To help meet this need the CDC has worked out an agreement with a sign manufacturer to receive a discount on bulk sign purchases, which we were able to accomplish thanks to our nonprofit status. As a result we have provided the townships with the following:

– 104 Stop signs and 179 signposts.

– 20 “High Water” signs

– 45 Blank signs for street names

– 12 “Men Working” signs

– 30 Reflectors for stop sign posts

– 25 Blank yellow marker signs

We also provided the townships with 8 36 in, 20ft long culverts and 10 12 in, 20ft long culverts.

This was done at absolutely NO cost to the townships!

All of these signs were provided to the townships and was made possible through the continued support of our financial benefactors, small monetary donations and the revenue from our Outdoor Eco Expo and Sportsman’s Bash. Remember, when you donate to the CDC or support the Eco Expo, all proceeds stay RIGHT HERE in Guernsey County and go towards making our county a better place to live and work.

In other news we received the final agreement for the archery range that we will be building on CDC property located near the state hospital grounds. This state of the art complex will consist of the latest targets, elevated platforms that simulate firing from a tree stand and an Atlas Archery Trap Machine that will allow individuals to shot at aerial targets. This range will be completed by fall (weather permitting) and be open to the public shortly thereafter. Please keep checking FB for updates.

Lastly, the CDC made its last pledged donation to the Village of Pleasant City for the construction of a much needed salt bin. The $5,000 donation will help to pay for material and concrete. This project was spearheaded by former Pleasant City Mayor and current CDC Board Member Mike Stranathan and current Pleasant City Council Member Tammy Gress-Wills. Once the salt bin is completed, it will provide ample storage space for the village’s salt and ashes, which will decrease the amount lost to rain, thereby saving money for the residents of the villages.

In the mean time don’t forget to check out www.outdoorecoexpo.com for the latest updates on our Outdoor Eco Expo and Sportsman’s Bash. Updates on prizes, vendors, seminars and more are included. You can also buy your tickets via our automated system.

Take care,

Ron G.

NatureWorks Grant

Last night’s check presentation was the accumulation of a yearlong collaborative effort between myself and the CDC as well as Heidi Cunningham and the Village of Senecaville. The combined efforts of all involved helped to secure a NatureWorks Grant, through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, for $21,705.00. On the surface it appears to be nothing more than a donation, when in reality the process was much more strenuous than anyone had anticipated. The primary issue was funding. Under a NatureWorks Grant the entity awarded the grant must first spend the money in order to receive grant funding. This is called a reimbursable grant. The problem with this setup is that many small communities lack the necessary funding required to buy the playground equipment. As a result most do not qualify for the grant. My organization however does have the money, but here is the kicker; the CDC can not apply for the grant, as it is not a government entity. Therefore we have the money but can not apply, whereas Senecaville can apply but does not have the money. So I created a work around that solved this conundrum while increasing the collaborative effort between the CDC and Senecaville. The solution was for Senecaville to apply for the grant (wrote by myself and Heidi) and for my organization to donate the money to Senecaville to buy the play-pods. Once the pods have been installed and Senecaville has been reimbursed by ODNR, the village will give the money back to the CDC. Why give the money back? Because going forward this is how the CDC will ensure that EVERY small community will receive upgraded play round equipment. If the CDC simply donated $21,000 to every play ground, we would quickly run out of money. By utilizing this method of operating the CDC will be able to setup a revolving “Play Ground Improvement Fund” and use the same money over and over again to purchase new playground equipment. Together we CAN make a difference.

Thanks,

Ron G
